Radical Love Will Always Meet Resistance
By Gabby Llewellyn
“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.” — Matthew 7:13-14
Okay wait— don’t close the tab! I promise I’m not going to say what you think I’m going to say about this verse!
If some verses need a trigger warning before you can read them, for me this is one of them. I spent most of my adult Christian life living in mortal fear that I was headed down a path of destruction. In college especially, this verse was weaponised so many times, I was terrified to put a toe out of line, less I got swept up in the powerful, rushing current of the wide gate to hell. Maybe you can relate.
But as my faith evolves, I’ve started to work of the courage to face some of the verses that instilled the most terror in my heart. To read them again with fresh eyes, to see them through the lens of the loving and kind God I’ve come to know. This issue is my attempt to bring some newness to this familiar and sometimes scary verse.
